In this YouTube video, the AFL-CIO Secretary Treasurer talks about the role of racism in the US presidential election. He starts out like this:

"There's not a single good reason for any worker, especially any union member, to vote against Barack Obama. And there's only one really, really bad reason to vote against Barack Obama. And that's because he's not white."

He tries to continue, but he is interrupted by applause and a standing ovation.

I don't know how staged this might have been, but I was moved.

He goes on to discuss the role of unions in fighting racism.

Historically, it would be more accurate to say that unions encouraged rather than opposed racism.
