Star Trek movie

I found a theater that offered it with rear window captioning so the OH could see it with me. Now I don't have to go to Wiscon prepared to clap my hands over my ears every five minutes to avoid spoilers.

Watching the movie made me happy. I was entertained.


Sylar gives good Spock. Sylar gives REALLY good Spock.

The rest of the actors did a good job of implying the original characters.

I suppose every action movie these days has to have revenge-motivated piratical villains with tribal tattoos and trench coats. But revenge-motivated piratical villains with tribal tattoos and trench coats who are ROMULAN?

I suppose every science fiction thriller these days has to have killer black holes. [*Cue giant sucking sound*]

Uhura-Spock works. A shame that she didn't get to do anything other than be a love interest, because I got the impression the actress would have done a good job with a broader role.

Typically, all the other women in the movie were there to be murdered to make male characters pissed off, or to give birth to male characters.

It's not that I don't *like* Uhura/Spock, it's just...I'm so steeped in the early episodes that the existence of Uhura/Spock strains my warp drive.

But Sylar gives such good Spock I was still clutching the armrests.

We did get to watch Uhura's expertise mentioned and apparently used. I didn't feel she was only there as a love interest.

Yeah! I don't really think Uhura and Spock really talked that much in ST originally. Then (having grown up w/ ST) seeing them in a *relationship*, my brain was all, "WHAT?!"

There are a few interactions in ST:TOS episodes that could be interpreted as showing attraction or friendship between Uhura and Spock, although much more restrained than the friendship between Spock and Kirk.

Indeed. Given the leads are all male, I think the only way to have a leading female in a Star Trek movie would be a) re-cast the leads a la Starbuck and Boomer or b) have a female villian a la First Contact.

Or turn Pavel Chekov into Antonia Chekov.

The break point in the timeline is Kirk's birth. Anyone younger than Kirk is fair game. And since Chekov didn't show up until Season 2 anyway . . .

It's a thought and would get more women on the bridge. But most of the camera time will still be on the Kirk/Spock/McCoy troika.

As, honestly, it ought to be -- that's the troika that makes the show work. And, anyway, both Spock and McCoy are older that Kirk, and therefore have had a good chunk of their childhoods BEFORE the branch point, so they could be less significantly changed.

Wait a second, what is Rear Window Captioning, and why haven't I heard about this!? :)

My sweetie is hard of hearing and often complains that it's hard to hear dialog in the movie theater and she wishes they had subtitles.

I'd be very interested to know what theater you went to and whether the captioning was acceptable.

We went to Eastridge Mall 15, 2190 Eastridge Loop San Jose. They don't offer captioning for every movie or every showtime.

The OH said that the captions didn't display properly for about 1/4 of the movie, but when they did display, it worked OK for him.

I dunno, I thought Eomer was sufficiently older than the rest of the cast for him to work as Bones.

My understanding, which I got from Memory Alpha, is that this cast has signed on for two more movies if this one does well. I think it's going to do well.

I agree Eomer worked as Bones, but for some reason the sex appeal wasn't quite there for me. Perhaps if I hadn't been so distracted by Sylar and Nemo...

There's probably a longer LJ post in this, but all of my early crushes were either doctors or EMTs (McCoy, Johnny Gage in Emergency!) and now, looking back, I can't figure out if I had crushes on them or if I wanted to be them - and if I wanted to be them, what changed?
