What's the difference between Madonna and Lady GaGa?

About 30 years and the fact that Lady GaGa hasn't jumped the shark yet? :-)

That's about it, as far as I can tell.

Yeah, I think the main difference is that Lady Gaga started as a songwriter, where it took Madonna 25 years to get to a point where she could write a song by herself. Gaga also isn't as advanced in dance training as Madonna, who really started off as a dancer who could sorta sing and grew from there with help of great marketing.

Lady GaGa is a Madonna wanna-be. Madonna is MADONNA.

Well, their careers have a very similar trajectory if you compare Lady GaGa now to Madonna at the beginning of her career. There's that same dancey-club-music-not-particularly-lyrically-interesting sort of music, and that same image that pushes people's buttons. I find that they're more of less offset by twenty years, with adjustments made for cultural mores and inflation.

Lady GaGa is better funded at this stage in her career than Madonna was, so I've found that there's a little less creativity in the images she presents in videos and in stage shows because she's throwing money at something ingenuity would resolve better. Lady GaGa has a sort of schlock that Madonna doesn't. There's something campy and ugly about her, whereas Madonna is more traditionally vampy and sexy.

Musically, Lady GaGa is much more polished than Madonna was at this stage in her career. Producers have put a lot more finish on her music, which I think really complements the ugly, harsh edge that Lady Gaga brings to her music. Unfortunately, as a result, her tracks lack the kind of emotional depth that Madonna's early music had, though Lady Gaga's tracks are catchier and more even throughout. Madonna is also a more talented lyricist, though I'd argue that Lady Gaga is more clever. Madonna straight up sings a better ballad (it's not that Lady GaGa is bad but that she lacks some soulful quality that I'm looking for) and Lady Gaga can lay down a stronger dance track.

Generally speaking though, I'd say the main differences between the two are hair color, age, and career/life status.

I did make a post about Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, and Madonna a few weeks ago, so their careers have been on the forefront of my mind as of late.
