My Dad is experimenting with a so-called curry recipe that my mom used to make. When I was a kid it tasted really spicy to me. I expect that I wouldn't taste any spice at all now, as the recipe is written. This recipe is pretty much the only memory I have that lets me compare my taste sense today with what it was when I was a kid.

Different curry powders have different intensities, so you could be working with a milder one than you remember. Something else to consider is that spices tend to lose flavor during long storage. You might find a little jar labeled "curry powder" in the back of a cupboard, but it's not going to taste the way it did 5 years ago. If it's been stored for a long time, in a clear plastic jar, it might be close to flavorless.
