Here we go!

10. Pick 10 random icons from your userpics and tell me about them.

This is Vir, a character from Babylon 5. This is one of the icons I use when I am frustrated.

Two wagging dog tails. These are dogs up for adoption at the animal shelter I volunteer for. They are wagging their tails because they hope I will let them out of their run. I often use this icon when I am posting a congratulatory comment to someone.

This is a statue of two fat people kissing. My dad gave it to me. My dad really gets it sometimes.

This is a naked fat girl lying on a peach. This was a shirt on threadless.com once upon a time. threadless.com doesn't make shirts in my size so I stole the image for an icon instead.

This is a still from one of my favorite movies, Wings of Desire. A friend who also loves the movie made the macro for me.

This is essentially my "yay fandom!" slogan.

I lerrve Spock in all his incarnations

Hothead Paisan, Homicidal Lesbian Terrorist (a creation of Diane DiMassa) is a FEH MUH NIST. So am I.

This is what I have to communicate when I feel pressure to conform.

Disapproving gorilla is disapproving.

11. What features do you think Dreamwidth should have that it doesn't currently?
I haven't been giving this much thought lately.

12. What do you consider the 10 most "telling" interests from the list on your profile? Why?

alt.polyamory
One of my favorite social networks was and will always be Usenet. alt.polyamory is my Usenet home. I learned everything I know about poly there (well, the things I didn't learn by screwing stuff up trying to do poly) and taught a few people some things about poly, too. I archived a bunch of my posts here. I maintain the web page for alt.polyamory (http://www.polyamory.org). (Warning: ugly web sites.)

amplectere potestem "et"
Latin for "embrace the power of 'and'", which I consider a rejection of binary thinking and a celebration of diversity.

animal rescue
my primary volunteer work for many years has been with Peninsula Humane Society. I helped get the adoptable animals up on their brand-new web site. I did adoption fairs. I walked dogs. I worked as a dog trainer (and learned a lot about dog training). I petted cats. I took pictures of animals to put on the web site. I sat in dog runs while half a dozen chihuahuas swarmed all over me. I haven't been able to do much physical stuff there lately but I still work on the web site.

buddhism
my religious interests took me from Protestant Christianity to secular humanism to paganism (Wiccan/shamanic) to Buddhism. I'm flavored by all of them, but mostly what I do these days is listen to dharma talks and sit.

collecting other people's hobbies
I'm interested in way more activities than I have time or capacity to actually do, and sometimes I get very interested in one I'm not gonna do and I do a lot of research on it. For example I got interested in dog agility training, but I don't have a dog of my own. I read a lot about it and went to dog agility competition, where I was usually the only non-participant.

fat activism
I'm convinced that fat-acceptance, body positivity, and health at every size saved my life and sanity. I've been trying to spread the word ever since I encountered them. My main activity is maintaining a list of fat friendly health professionals.

genderfuck
I'm not really sure where I fall on the gender landscape except (a) the garden marked "comfortably feminine and cisgendered" is definitely not where I belong and (b) my body is female and I don't seem particularly inclined to change that in any permanent ways, although I'm fine with dressing up to come across as androgynous or nongendered or geek-gendered or butch.

hello kitty
I used to be deeply ambivalent about hello kitty and now almost everything hello kitty delights me, and I've transferred my ambivalence to steampunk.

romantic friendship, romantic love
Often I'd rather sit with a sweetie and hold hands and look at the ocean than have 500 screaming orgasms. I also often feel the kinds of love talked about here— http://xkcd.com/442/ —and I really value those feelings.

silence
Facilitates the feelings discussed in the previous entry.

unintentional communities
In the poly community a lot of people talk about "intentional community," which scares me because for some reason I keep mishearing it as "enforced conformity." (I know it doesn't have to be that way. It's my own brain glitch.) I was watching the awesomely wonderful movie Bagdad Cafe once, and I said "I don't want intentional community, I want unintentional community." Because that's what the movie is about.

13. Do you have any unique interests on your user profile? What are they? How'd they get there?

On Dreamwidth my unique interests are:
  • a fetish for nuance An interest shared with my sweetie [personal profile] kyubi
  • andy scott Guitarist for my fave rock band, Sweet, and my lifelong fancrush
  • cameo glass Not quite sure why this is a unique interest. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cameo_glass
  • cat goddesses I have been known to collect depictions of Bast and other cat goddesses
  • cute fat people I'm sad that this is a unique interest. Why do we have to divide fat people up into euphemistic acronyms like BBW and BHM and bear and whatnot in order to appreciate the way they look?
  • harner shamanism* Less-culturally-appropriating "core" shamanism as taught by Michael Harner's Foundation for Shamanic Studies. I don't do it much any more but it was important to me for a long time.
  • i-things Apple gadgets. It should be iThings, but you can't have capital letters in the interest list, and ithings doesn't quite look right.
  • indirect communication A lot of people are down on indirect communication, but I think it's useful and fun when used among people who all understand what the protocols are (which would be people from similar cultures, and/or people who have known each other for a while).
  • mutual degrumplement An interest shared with my sweetie [personal profile] kyubi
  • no dharma* When I was an editor at Yale University Press, I edited a book by David Loy called Nonduality. It was more or less my introduction to Buddhism. It included a quote that I have loved ever since I saw it:
The dharma of the dharma is that there are no dharmas. But now that the no-dharma dharma has been transmitted, how can the dharma of the dharma be a dharma?
Now that I've studied Buddhism a bit more I understand better where this is coming from, which doesn't prevent me from loving it.
  • re-railing* The opposite of derailing, in the context of political discussions. Here's a good page about derailing: http://www.derailingfordummies.com/
  • techshop A membership-based maker's shop with classes. I was given a lifetime membership, and I haven't made nearly enough use of it. http://www.techshop.ws/
  • theravada The school of Buddhism I am most involved with. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theravada

I am glomming some of your interests:

fetish for nuance (con permiso, since it's shared with your sweetie...if you'd rather not, then I love private things for sweeties, so no stress. Please only opt-in with "it's okay, Trinker". (I.e. if it's not, just don't say anything.)

Yay! Thank you for the inspiration to update mine a bit. I can't believe I didn't have "indirect communication" on my list.

Naked fat girl lying on a peach made me laugh and laugh and laugh. I never realized that's what she was meant to be sprawling on before.

My nickname for my partner is Peach. ;)

Cameo glass is pretty cool! Though a bit too extravagant for me, heh.
