Was that a typo? Is there a 0 missing? because, 1,000 would be a good-sized collection. At 500, and I would admire your restraint. 100, and I start to wonder if you lost the others in a stolen moving van or something.

I live by myself and have about 70, counting the 14 box sets (assorted tv series) as one each because otherwise it gets complicated, and I consider that a pretty small collection because I'm picky about my movies, so...

I live by myself and have in the neighborhood of 250. I finally got a Netflix membership because I was running out of room for the damned things and needed go talk myself out of buying them. Looking at the poll numbers, though, I begin to wonder if I'm not as average as I thought I was on this score.... :/

We're two middle-class geeks in late 30s and early 40s, and we've got about 250 counting the box sets as one each.

I counted between 40 and 50 (some are missing) in approximately 12 years; I claim 1.) pickiness and 2.) unavailability of desired DVDs.

As I think I remember, you have a mess of unconverted videotape.

Mid-20s, and mostly have been too broke to buy DVDs. So I have the first two seasons of BSG and Firefly and handful of others and that's it.

Mid-twenties and single, and I have about 40. I think 100 isn't shabby or small, though neither is it at all large.

I think maybe I should've recused myself -- I married a former film student. He keeps getting DVDs, and I keep building more shelves to house them. I think we're at... uhm... maybe, wait. According to the math, we should have almost 1200 DVDs, but I suspect it's maybe somewhat less, since we still have a lot of VHS tapes. But then, that's not counting all the anime & various foreign dramas, which we store in slimline cases to save room, and I'm pretty sure we have about 50 series. So maybe about 1200 or more DVDs isn't that far off the mark.

HOLY CRAP. I only have two eyeballs! How did I have the time to watch that many movies/series!?

My reference point: we've been together 8.5 years, most of them with little income, and we have roughly 400-500' though LOTS of those were super-bargain disks o'schlock.

I'm pretty sure we've passed the 100 mark, and we've not been together 10 years yet.

We probably have 50-150, of which about 30 are for the offspring. But I really don't know, because so many of them are sets we have never opened (and may not for the foreseeable future, as things stand now). We watched all of Da Vinci seasons 1 and 2, but Hornblower and Bond lie dormant, as does Red Dwarf. I think we opened the MST set (there are two boxes of tapes, but you know how that goes).

We've been together 15 years now. Goodness.

Small to medium.

I'm either too lazy to count ours or too afraid, but I'm sure it's much larger than that.

Although it also depends on how many videotapes that is on top of.

Supergee is not one for watching movies or TV in general; over the years, people (mostly Womzilla & I) have bought him some of his favorite movies on DVD, but that's not much. And none of the TV shows--boxed sets of an entire run of a TV show take up a lot of space.

We've just bought a big-ass (50") TV and will set it up to stream Netflix; we'll see if the latter makes us less likely to buy/keep DVDs.

I think we have roughly 100, and (1) I didn't have any DVDs when I moved here (1998 -- they were available, but not yet the primary format) and (2) neither of us is terribly fond of TV/movies. So yeah, small.

I recuse myself as I note that my sense of books vs. other media varies widely, and that having been in a severely ascetic environment (being a liveaboard on a boat) has warped my ideas further.
