More than a quarter of people in mortgage default or foreclosure are over 50. For an older person with chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension, the types of health problems we saw are short term consequences of falling behind on a mortgage that could have long-run implications for that person's health.

there's a thing here where some new build flats are for public sector workers and you part rent part buy them. i was pretty keen to do it, though it would have been a financial squeeze. this was just before i got ill. to this day i wonder if it would have worked out ok or whether i would have ended up homeless. as it was i was in public housing, so stayed where i was, and can claim rent as long as i get benefits... being actively homeless would probably have tipped me over the edge.
