Strange ideas 'R' us

The OH and I went to a restaurant called The Village Pub, which has a mind-bogglingly large selection of wines and spirits. We don't drink much at all but I was amusing myself by perusing the dessert drinks list, which had many whiskys, including a Welsh whisky. I didn't know there was any such thing as Welsh whisky. Maybe partly because, as Wikipedia tells me, there wasn't any from sometime in the 19th century until 1990.

Anyway, I wound up on http://www.celticmalts.com/ reading an article about Welsh whisky, and I glanced at the sidebar and saw a link labeled "Outer Hebridean whisky." Both Wales and the Hebrides are important in the history of knitting and sheep breeding, so suddenly my brain went "Whisky and knitting tour! Single malt whisky and single origin sheep!"

You can include Australia on that tour! My area was notorious for illegal whisky in the 1880s (the descendants of the main culprit still live here, on the same farm) and now there's a whisky brewery again. And of course there's the superfine merino projects and the rare historical sheep and pig farm.

With enough whisky and yarn, the 24 hour flight between the UK and Australia would be a breeze!

i'm not a whisky fan, and i don't drink nowadays, but i think glayva was one of the nicest things i ever tasted.

http://www.englishwhisky.co.uk/ is truly excellent, both for detailed tour and the sheer audacity! It works, it really does.

Talisker distillery on Skye is great and http://www.shilasdair-yarns.co.uk/ (also on Skye) is a wonderfully tempting place, although hideously expensive.

Yay! This might happen, whether or not I do a whisky and sheep tour; I hear that Worldcon might be in London in 2014.
