...except that I have a friend who loves Joe Manganiello. But this image makes me REALLY CURIOUS. If not about the show, then about the costume designer.
Hells bells, I've not only read all the books I've watched all the shows so far. The lovely gentleman on the right is LaFayette, he's a semi-regular since the first episode and has had plot lines/stories all his own. He's at the funeral of another semi-regular. The lady on the left is a Wiccan who is dating the town sheriff.
And yeah, whoever does LaFayette's makeup gets major props, he always looks hot even when wearing a raggedy kimono at home.
Lafayette is a flamboyantly gay man and pretty great. I've only watched the first season of True Blood (and I don't really rec it, though it was certainly fun in parts), but he was definitely one of my favourite characters, alas he's relatively minor and the show was of course much more in love with the straight white characters.
True Blood has long since parted ways with anything resembling the stories in the Sookie Stackhouse novels (except the names). It's gone completely over the top and exists in a truly weird alternate universe.
That said, Lafayette is one of the good things about that divergence, since he is the murder victim du jour in the second novel. We never learned much about Lafayette in the novels, so a great deal of what we discover about him in the show is the creation of the writers--and the actor, who is fascinating to watch.
I've only read the first few books and seen about half of S1, but I believe that's Lafayette, a.k.a. the only character I didn't want to punch in the face.
Spoiler: He gets killed off at the beginning of the second book, but I guess the TV writers realized that having a non-punchworthy character around was a good idea so he survives and has a more prominent role.
He is literally THE best thing in the entire show. Sadly, he's not getting much of a storyline for himself this season. But damn he is beautifully genderqueer in every scene he's in and just effing fabulous. Also, you want to, like, cuddle him in blankets and put a force shield around him all the time - i.e. perhaps it's a good thing he doesn't have a him-centric storyline this season because the poor dude is getting a bit of a break from all of the trauma.
