Dear Crunchyroll, you just lost a potential customer because you demanded that I choose either "male" or "female" before letting me sign up.

And WTF does it fucking matter! If your name matches your Pp or credit card is all they need to know.

I think that asking someone's sex should be banned unless relevant. If you do not have a practical need to see or touch their crotch then you do not need to know. Your crotch doctor and your lover(s) and maybe the person who sells you underwear need to know. Not a lot else.

I'm amused. I just looked up my listing in "Program Participants" for Detcon1. I sent them a short bio, which I wrote in first person but for the listing has been edited into third person. I did not include a picture, and my first name is gender-ambiguous -- so in any place where a pronoun would have been used, they repeated my first name instead. It sounds a little weird, but I have to give them full credit for Not Assuming.

A lot of times on places like that...I just lie. To deliberately mess up their marketing algorithms, which I assume are the main reason they have for requiring that kind of info in the first place.

I do that too. I do have a Crunchyroll account, and I can't remember if I was feeling mellow that day or if it was before they were asking that obnoxious question. I have been known to give dollar amounts I was planning on spending.

For me it's anything that demands access to my Facebook account. I keep Facebook on a VERY tight leash, and saying I can't sign up except thru that account sends me right to the Back button.

My only exception to that is Spotify, because a friend who walked through it assured me I could set it to never, ever, ever, ever post to FB without my explicit permission, which it will never receive. But otherwise there is no connecting to Facebook ever.

Spotify is the one i was trying to remember. My issue isn't that it would post to Facebook, it's that once I unlock Facebook platform access for one thing, it's open for anything that wants to grab on -- it's an on-or-off, all-or-nothing deal. So when Spotify insisted that I could only set up an account via Facebook, I said "goodbye". Well, actually I said "FOAD", but you get the idea. :-)

Same here. After sites started auto-filling my personal data in the comments section when I clicked there from FB, even less likely. This is why I use separate browsers. And yeah, unless you absolutely need gender (in which case you don't offer m/f only) it's just stupid and offensive to ask).

(I feel a little like the distant analog of Walter Cronkite during Tet here: if you've lost a 50-comething cis white male on gender issues like this one, you're really doing something wrong.)
