Re the Salon article on the effects of filming in Africa:

I'd wondered about the effects of filming in the desert, and hoped they had a location that was already dedicated to that kind of destruction - apparently not. Phoo. And the article doesn't really detail the environmental destruction much beyond quoting the (one?) activist who complained.

The rest of the analysis is sort of meh, but the worst of it is the complaint that the film's use of African extras "embody[s] the myth of the African with nothing left to lose," since the film does not depict Africans at all - the boys were painted black and white and were indistinguishable from any other extras. Now, that is a problem, but it's not the problem the article suggests. And I'm starting to get kind of upset that all the articles I've read so far critiquing the film from a leftist viewpoint are such intellectually flimsy tinsel.
