This article seems to be arguing that a number of US Presidents since Roosevelt have acted in ways opposed to the on-paper political views of their parties (Eisenhower was relatively liberal, Nixon was relatively liberal, Reagan was relatively liberal, Clinton was relatively conservative, and Obama is relatively conservative).

Seems logical. To become President, one really ought to be fairly moderate, at least tolerable to the majority of the country, and would therefore tend to be more toward the center than one's party.
