on an unrelated note: i saw a cat walking by the fence of a fast food place tonite. he was limping; in my headlights, i could see that he was missing a foot. i couldn't tell if he was in pain.
i parked and got out and talked to him. "are you ok? do you need a doctor?" he meowed at me.
i'm quite allergic to cats, and i've heard a lot about feral cats. i wasn't sure if he lived nearby and just hung out here; or if he was feral, disabled but healed; or if he was in need of some real help. so i got back in the car and took out my cell phone.
If he meowed at you, he wasn't really feral. Feral cats avoid humans.
Also if he was walking, he wasn't seriously injured right at the moment. If they are injured, they hide.
What I would do would be to approach the cat and see if it had an ID, and if not, and I could get it in my car, take it to the animal shelter. But since you're allergic it wouldn't've made sense to do that.

i looked back, and of course the cat was gone.
what should i have done?
