First, of course, it plays to the hostility that a certain subset of men have for women, especially women who (sensibly) won't go out with them or even remain in their company. Second, it relies on the law of large numbers. If even a couple percent of your target population respond to this kind of stuff, persistence will eventually lead to "success". (And mind you, the definition of success is pretty twisted as well.)
