"Mad Max: Fury Road is a story about sexists, told by non-sexists.
I know it’s a bit confusing, because we’re so used to seeing stories about sexists told by sexists. We’re so used to sexism being portrayed by sexist male filmmakers for the sake of a sexist male audience, that we’ve been fooled into thinking this is the only way sexism even can be portrayed."

"Max doesn’t kill anyone until he has to....Because he’s not out for vengeance. Not like Furiosa. Furiosa is angry, she wants revenge, she wants to tear people apart with her bare hands. Max is a kicked dog."

"To give side characters cohesive story beats specific to them, that still serve the overall tone & sweep of the narrative – that’s what all storytellers want to achieve. This is the gold level. And y’know, a movie that is literally three quarters CAR CHASES did a better job depicting independent, nuanced female side characters than the majority of what Hollywood has ever churned out."

"Furiosa's politics and war make it possible for the Wives to move forward with philosophy and agriculture. Neither of them are wrong. And how much do I love this movie about generations of women disagreeing with each other and caring for each other?"

Date: 5 Jul 2015 01:42 am (UTC)I also really, really like lierdumoa's observations about sexism. Reminds me of something I read recently (should have bookmarked) about GRR Martin's ASoIaF and GoT. That huge debate about all the rapes and women's place in general, and how those rapes are usually defended as "realistic" or "necessary" in some historical/emotional/aesthetic sense.
Anyway, in the middle of a longer post (tumblr) about all this, it's mentioned casually that apparently GRRM has stated outright that he will never write a rape from the victim's viewpoint. And I was "wait what? Did he truly say that?" Because if he did, doesn't that immediately completely cancel any argument about historical accuracy or wanting to show how evil the evil characters are, or grimdark style, or whatever? Did I misunderstand?
Lierdumoa makes me feel better, because I hadn't thought about how "bitch" isn't necessary to demonstrate sexist characters are sexist, and instead tells you about the creators of the work. And if I hadn't, it seems more okay (but sad) that so many people haven't noticed what the rapes tell us about GRRM.
