I'm at the Los Angeles Airport Marriott for a NAAFA convention.

I drove here. Once I hit LA I realized that although I've visited neighboring areas a number of times and have spent a day or three in LA proper here or there, I've never been here for a solid week.

I probably won't have much time to do anything other than conventioning, but if I were to do something around town, what do you think it should be?

Cute-poet-chick and I always liked to do tv-related stuff. She's a total pop-culture diva. We went to the Television Museum, and we went and saw shows being taped. I really haven't spent much non-tv-related time in LA, typo LJ.

You are less than 5 miles from me :). Look to the N and a little to the west and there I am (*just* N of LAX).

What do you like? And it depends on how far afield you want to go (or don't want to).

This stuff is fairly close:

There's obviously the beach; Santa Monica Pier and the 3rd Street Promenade - there's shops, sometimes performers; Venice Boardwalk lots of shops and lots of performers - artists, skaters (who do routines and dance), dancers; there's a nature sort of walk in the Ballona Wetlands (at Lincoln and Jefferson) - it's peaceful; there's a little "Fisherman's Village" in the Maria (del Rey) - touristy but there's some restaurants and there's a harbor tour, you can also rent boats; the Getty Center (free but you have to pay for parking).

My usual recommendation for the coolest place in L.A. is the Museum of Jurassic Technology. This is a storefront on Venice Blvd. in Culver City and is, essentially, a parody of a Victorian natural history museum. The exhibits include stuff like a bat that can fly through solid objects by getting up into ultrasound, for example. The last time I was there, they had expanded a lot and had a great exhibit on string figures, including video demonstrations. It's very weird, but that's what I like about it.

If the Thursday night dances on the pier at Santa Monica are still happening, they often have great music.

You could go up to the Thai mall in Hollywood and eat great food in the food court, accompanied by a Thai Elvis impersonator.

On weekends, the L.A. Conservancy does interesting walking tours downtown.

I enjoyed the Fredericks of Hollywood Museum, which has famous lingerie and lingerie costumes and delves a bit into the history of lingerie.

Also, La Brea Tar Pits was super cool, although not right in town.

If i were in LA, i'd want to see the LA County Art Museum (near the tar pits?) and the Getty. They're both probably inconvenient to reach, although the Getty may be on the way out of town.

However, i'd never heard of the Museum of Jurassic Technology. That sounds *cool*

I visited the Getty last time I was in LA. It's free (though parking isn't). The collection is pretty good, but the gardens and architecture are fabulous.

That museum sounds really nifty!

I liked the Burke Williams spa when I went there for a massage, though I don't remember which location it was. Nice massage ($70 at the time), great big hot tub (20 people-ish?) with tubside pitchers of water w' orange slices), etc. http://www.burkewilliamsspa.com/

Also, the Huntington Library, Arts, and Botanical Gardens near Pasadena.

I haven't spent a lot of time in LA, but I like the La Brea Tar Pits (especially the wall of dire wolf skulls).

The botanical gardens at UCLA is nice, too.

You probably aren't the least bit interested in where I would want to go if I were staying in LA for a week (Hollywood Park just down Century Blvd. from where you are, the Commerce Casino in Commerce, and the Bicycle Club in Bell Gardens).

Venice Beach is a terrific venue for people-watching.

Are you at all interested in Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, or Universal Studios?

My very favorite thing to do in LA, of course, is to leave. The Bay Area is only six hours' drive away!

The Huntington is also a fine place to go. I highly recommend their afternoon tea, followed by a stroll through the rose garden (or the cactus garden or the Japanese garden, depending on your tastes).

I haven't been in LA since 1981 when I was giving a seminar. But we paused the seminar and all gathered in my room to watch the first shuttle take off. You should have heard us cheering!

Also, you might consider a trip to Lincoln Fabrics (in Venice, on Lincoln, natch), they are friendly, always have a huge variety of reasonably priced remnants and such (though never organized), and it's not intimidating like the hardcore places in the downtown fashion district.

Marina del Rey is also the home of ISI (http://www.isi.edu/), which is one of the birthplaces of the ARPAnet and Internet.

There's also McCabe's Guitar Shop (http://www.mccabes.com/) on Pico just west of the 10 overpass, featuring lots of guitars and other instruments, not to mention concerts.
