Recycling some of my verbiage from last year’s roundup: [community profile] ficinabox is a large exchange (almost 1,000 works in 322 fandoms this year) that challenges you to write 10K words (or the equivalent in other media), but the words/other can be broken up into multiple works. Many different media types are explicitly included and can be requested via tags — for example "Reddit: In-Universe r/AmITheAsshole Post," "Knitting Chart," "Illustrated Text - Bestiary."

There's also a swap option. Once you receive your assignment, you can trade some of it in for another assignment. For example you can trade in 5K words of your assignment for 5K words of one or more other assignments.

This is my fourth year participating. The first two years, I wrote a single 10K work. Last year I swapped part of my assignment for three other assignments, for a total of four. That was a bit of a mistake. This year I ended up with three assignments. I defaulted on one but I picked up a pinch hit to replace it, so I don’t feel too bad about that.

I typically angst terribly over this exchange but end up receiving wonderful gifts and writing things I am pleased with, even if they don’t get tons of attention. That happened this year too.

I wrote about 17,500 words altogether — for the film Amadeus (Amadeus/Salieri), the novel Band Sinister by KJ Charles, and the novel series His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman.

I received four delightful gifts: Two for Ragnarok TV, one for Loki TV, all by my fanfic friend with whom I run a “more cakes” bakery shop (♥) and one original work in the supernatural noir detective genre.

I’m trying out the [community profile] inkingitout community in 2024. So far for 2023 I’ve almost made it to 200K words, and my primary goal is to match that in 2024, with a +25% stretch goal.

black and white image with words “inkingitout a year-long writing community join us as we try to write more than 75000 words in 2024”

Challenge yourself to write 75000 words or more in 2024!

[community profile] inkingitout offers low key and supportive weekly check ins to help you as you try to write 75,000 or more words in 2024.

Sometimes I take tests that purport to tell you if you are neuroatypical, and I've never gotten a clear answer. That happened again with eight tests I accessed here: https://embrace-autism.com/aq-10/ (each test includes links to additional tests). I found the site via [personal profile] mdlbear.

These five tests scored me as probably not autistic/neuroatypical/lacking in empathy/alexithymic/ADHD: AQ, Empathy quotient, Toronto Alexithymia Scale, Systematizing quotient, ASRS-5

These four tests scored me as probably autistic/neuroatypical: CAT-Q, RAADS-R, RBQ-2A, Aspie quiz

Details under the cut.

Probably more than you want to know about some questionnaires psychology researchers made up and my scores on them. )

The biggest clue I might be atypical in some way, IMHO: The fact that I took these tests and made a list out of my scores and POSTED IT.

We now return you to your regular "muddling through with the personality you've got, whatever they might be calling it this week" life.

Flash flood exchange is a small short-schedule exchange for fics featuring bodily fluids. It’s in its third year. This year 33 stories were posted, five more than last year. This is the first year I’ve participated.

The prompt I picked was Greek Army/Helen of Troy. It got a bit dark.

I received two really enjoyable fics, one Apollo/Cassandra (written by the person I was assigned to) and one Game of Thrones.

[community profile] fandom_empire is a prompt challenge community that started this year and ran three themed 12-week events. The third challenge had a Powerball theme. I posted two works for it this month.

The challenges were pretty inspiring for me. I posted twelve works overall. A lot of people were much more active than me! There are over 500 works in the Fandom Empire AO3 collection.

I was so moved by the final episode of Loki TV season 2 that I wrote a fic about it the same night I watched it (crossover with Lucifer TV):
Falling (1515 words) by firecat
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply

My final work for the community this year had Jack Harkness battling zombies:
Swift, Sudden Turn of Death (1216 words) by firecat
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Summary: To Jack Harkness, death has become temporary. But when he finds himself in the midst of a zombie outbreak at his favorite pub, he wonders if this is the moment his condition will change.

[community profile] trickortreatex is a large exchange for stories that are tricks (horror, occult, supernatural, scary, etc) or treats (sweet, sexy, fluffy, etc.). The minimum is 300 words or a "nice sketch". It's been running since 2014.

Over 700 works were posted. This year there was a community challenge to write at least 250 “trick” and 250 “treat” works. We beat the challenge and won the badge that I used for this post’s icon.

This is the third year I've participated. I wrote a Halloween story based on Constantine TV.

I received two cakes! That is, two people wrote the same prompt from my requests — Jones the Cat from the Alien series of movies has kittens to protect. One was a treat, set post-canon, and one was a trick, set in the first movie (which carefully threaded my “cat harm” DNWs)! I love it when that happens.

[community profile] relationshipping is an exchange for works featuring incest. 2023 is the eighth year it has run. Around 135 works were posted.

I participated in 2021 but not 2022.

I wrote in the Sandman comics canon, Dream/Destruction. I received a really fun original work around the prompt “ Group of brothers/Trans brother surprised to learn bro bonding time involves sex.

First time I’ve experienced this phenomenon: a story I wrote in 2021 is suddenly getting a lot more attention, I’m guessing because a new season of the show has dropped.

Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Assane Diop/Benjamin Ferel
Characters: Assane Diop, Benjamin Ferel, Youssef Guedira

Dear Yuletide participant: Thank you for writing something for me!

My AO3 name is [archiveofourown.org profile] firecat

My number one want: I hope you create something you enjoy, and have fun. I've included my likes and opt-ins, in case you want something to start from, but it's absolutely fine with me if you want to go in a different direction.

How is it I only just now found out that AMC has adapted Tony Hillerman's Leaphorn and Chee books (2 seasons so far, renewed for a third)?

The first season is also on Max.

[community profile] ififitsifics is a gifting event for cat-themed fanworks. This is its third year. 52 works were created in 33 fandoms — a hefty increase from last year!

This is one of my favorite exchanges. You’re shocked, I know.

I wrote about Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. Someone left a basket of kittens at the police station!

I received two stories. One is a hot romance featuring cat shapeshifter Loki and Mobius from Loki TV (*squeee*!). The second is a gentle ghost story about a bookstore cat, which went with another story in the collection, so I feel like I got three gifts!

I looked at my mastodon account firecat on pettingzoo.co for the first time in a month, and it has been suspended. I got no notice. I wonder if this happened to anyone else.

[personal profile] littleblackdress is an exchange for characters that "go with anything," that is, they can be shipped with multiple other characters. This is the second year I've participated. Almost 90 works were posted.

My LBD character this year was Loki, who got into it with Thor and Heimdall.

I received two gifts. My assigned person also wrote for me — Loki/Wong, a pair that hadn’t occurred to me and worked really well. And I also got a story about Ariadne/Dionysus that I really liked.
