loose-leaf tea
11 Jan 2008 01:18 pmI recently bought myself a little Japanese cast-iron teapot (tetsubin) with a mesh strainer. I want to brew loose-leaf tea in it. Do you know a source for good loose-leaf tea on the web? What brands do you especially like?
I especially like strong black tea that can stand up to milk, and toasted rice tea.

I bought some Darjeeling and some Sencha from Tea Gschwender recently:
http://www.teamerchants.com/US/en/Homepage.TG The company is based in East Frisia where people tend to drink tea with milk, so you might check out their recommendations. I used to usually drink black teas with milk, but I've been enjoying the Darjeeling straight up. I think you might want a heavier-bodied tea for milk, though.
My SO swears by the Taiwanese company Ten Ren http://www.tentea.com/
but he doesn't drink much black tea and never uses milk.

Date: 12 Jan 2008 01:50 am (UTC)Wow, I'm going to order some from them just to see how it is. I've been buying English Breakfast at a local store for $1.20 an ounce. It's quite decent, but it's not even organic. (Not that I expect this stuff to be organic at those prices, though. Do they offer organic teas? I didn't see anything about that on the site, but then I didn't spend much time there.)

I like that they have some organic teas. Their "we choose" shipping has always satisfied me to my Presidio and Mountain View addresses.
HTH!

Date: 11 Jan 2008 10:52 pm (UTC)I usually drink their Kalami Assam tea, but that might not be as strong as you like. My daughter Amanda likes strong black tea and she likes their Ceylon OPA tea. You can find it using Google marketplace, as well as at Amazon.

Date: 12 Jan 2008 12:27 am (UTC)For a strong black tea that can stand up to milk, it's hard to surpass Red Rose tea. I have no idea how you'd get it other than to have a Canadian ship some to you. I'd offer you some of my stash, but I'm down to my last couple of bags.
